The Takachiho Tourism and Products Center “TONNERU NO EKI (Tunnel Station)” in Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture, is a pretty unique spot. They’ve turned an old railroad tunnel into a shochu (Japanese spirit) storage facility, and it’s run by Kagura Shuzo, a local distillery. You can tour the tunnel cellar, try some tunnel-aged shochu, and pick up Miyazaki’s local specialties in the shop. There’s also a retro train from the old Takachiho Railway on-site, which has been turned into a free rest area. It’s the perfect spot to relax, enjoy some Miyazaki snacks you’ve bought, and take in the stunning natural scenery of Takachiho.

Perfect for Aging Shochu! Explore the Unique Tunnel Storage Facility

A 1,115-meter-long railway tunnel repurposed into a shochu storage facility! Inside the tunnel, the temperature remains at 17°C and humidity at 70% year-round. Around 1,300 barrels of shochu are aged here. The aroma and flavor of shochu aged in this natural environment are exceptional! You can tour the tunnel and see the impressive rows of barrels.  

Only Available Here: “Nijika” Shochu Umeshu – A Hit with Visitors to Japan

Limited Edition “Mugi Shochu Long-Aged 'Nijika”, available only here, is made with base liquor aged in the tunnel and features a gorgeous aroma. They also offer the popular “Umeshu” (Plum Wine), made with barley shochu, which has a rich, roasted flavor and smooth sweetness, a favorite among visitors to Japan.

Inside the store, there’s a free shochu tasting corner where you can casually enjoy Kagura Shuzo’s wide variety of shochu. It’s a great chance to savor something special, like their long-aged tunnel-stored shochu. Not sure what to pick? Try a few samples and find your favorite!
