Stay in a Traditional Japanese House with a Private Garden on Sado Island
Did you know you can stay in a traditional Japanese house surrounded by a private garden on Sado Island?
Just a 10-minute drive from Ryotsu Port, Garden House Dorakutei welcomes only one group per day. The owners hand-built the garden with care, filled with seasonal flowers and greenery, perfect for a stroll or a BBQ. At night, the stars shine brilliantly above, and you can even try a unique bath inspired by Japan’s old-fashioned goemon-buro, once heated by firewood. Blending countryside charm with modern comfort, it’s the perfect place to slow down and experience the warmth of Sado’s nature and hospitality.

Handcrafted Garden, Perfect for Strolling and BBQs
The garden, once a rice field, was lovingly transformed by the owners over two and a half years—all by hand. Benches and tables were handmade too, creating a space that changes beautifully with each season: blossoms in spring, lush greens in summer, red leaves in autumn, and snowy views in winter. Guests can enjoy a BBQ using fresh local ingredients and herbs grown right in the garden, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature.
A Heartwarming Encounter with the Owners
Mr. and Mrs. Watanabe, the owners of Dorakutei, are kind, down-to-earth, and always attentive without being intrusive. Even if you don’t speak Japanese, they make you feel welcome with gestures and smiles. Although the inn offers self check-in, the couple lives right next door, so you can always count on their support. Spending time in such quiet surroundings, cared for by such warm hosts, makes your stay deeply memorable.
A Unique Bath Experience with a Traditional Touch
Dorakutei features two ceramic tubs inspired by Japan’s old-style goemon-buro. While not the real thing, they capture the nostalgic atmosphere of traditional Japanese baths once heated by firewood. It’s a fun, relaxing experience to share with family or friends after a day of exploring Sado Island.
Peaceful Mornings and Starry Nights
With few houses nearby, you’ll wake up to the sound of birds and the soft light of morning. Enjoy breakfast in the garden before heading out to explore the island. At night, unwind under a sky full of stars with a glass of local sake from Sado. From sunrise to starlight, every moment here lets you feel the quiet beauty of Japan’s countryside. About the Writer
