Japan’s Largest Highland on a Remote Island! Stunning Views & Alpine Flowers at Sado Island’s Donden Highland Lodge

Donden Highland on Sado Island, Niigata, is a scenic plateau surrounded by about 900-meter-tall mountains. It’s Japan’s largest highland located on a remote island. From spring to fall, it’s filled with rare wildflowers. What makes this spot truly special? Its breathtaking mountain views, dreamy cloud seas, and starlit skies are perfect for unforgettable photos. You can also enjoy authentic French cuisine made with seasonal ingredients from Sado. If you want to catch the morning sea of clouds, staying overnight is a must. On clear days, you can even see across the ocean to Akita Prefecture in the north and Toyama Prefecture to the west on Japan’s main island, Honshu. (Closed for winter: Nov 2024 – Apr 2025)
