A Magical World of Light and Water – Takamori Yusui Tunnel Park

Stretching 2,055 meters long, Takamori Yusui Tunnel Park is home to a natural spring that gushes out an impressive 32 tons of water per minute. About 550 meters of the tunnel is open to the public, and with an average summer temperature of around 17°C, it’s a popular spot to escape the heat. In July, the Tanabata Festival—Japan’s traditional star festival—fills the tunnel with colorful decorations. Seasonal light-up displays also add a magical glow throughout the year, making it a scenic stop no matter when you visit.  

A Tunnel of Cherry Blossoms – Senbonzakura at Takamori Pass

Located in Takamori Nature Park, Senbonzakura (literally “a thousand cherry trees”) is a must-see spot in spring, when around 7,000 cherry trees burst into full bloom. The best time to visit is from late March to mid-April, and thanks to a 150-meter difference in elevation, the blooming season lasts longer. You can enjoy breathtaking views of Aso Gogaku (Five Peaks of Aso) from the top of Takamori Pass.  

A Panoramic View of Nature – The Scenery from Mt. Nekodake

One of the Five Peaks of Aso, Mt. Nekodake is known for its jagged rock formations. In summer, the lush greenery and wide-open grasslands create a beautiful landscape. The view from Tsukimawari Park, located in the town, is a picture-perfect spot! The changing colors of the mountains at sunrise and sunset create a dramatic scene, making it a favorite location for photographers.  

A Must-See Power Spot Filled with Natural Energy – The Giant Cedar of Takamori-don

The Giant Cedar of Takamori-don is a towering tree over 400 years old, with a trunk more than 10 meters around. Its dramatic, sprawling branches give off a powerful presence that draws visitors in.Known in Japan as a power spot—a place believed to be filled with natural energy—it’s just a 5-minute walk from the parking area. Come feel the strength of nature for yourself!
